The Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution outlawed the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors. From the time it became law in 1919 to its repeal thirteen years later, the era of Prohibition was defined by the closing of saloons and breweries and the removal of alcohol from public life and into the shadow of the black market.
